Bio Inspired Algorithms in Power System Operation: A Review

A literature review on applications of biologically inspired algorithms such as Differential evolution (DE), Invasive weed optimization (IWO), Cuckoo search algorithm (CSA), Firefly algorithm (FA) and Krill herd algorithm (KHA) has been presented. Economic dispatch (ED) is one of the key optimization problems in operation of power system. Aim of the ED problem is optimal allocation of power demand to available generators without violating constraints. Fuel cost of generator is non-smooth due to valve point loading and prohibited operating zones. Several conventional and biologically inspired algorithms in the past three decades have been suggested to solve the ED problem. Recently, hybrid algorithms with conventional and biologically inspired algorithms are proposed to solve the ED problem. It has been reported in several articles that quality of solution of the biologically inspired algorithms depends on control parameters. These algorithms take more computational time to get the solution. Research articles from various journals are referred and a short summary is provided. Also, the developments in algorithms and control parameters are provided.
