Krylov subspace based model order reduction of distribution networks

With the introduction of distributed energy resources there is increased use of power electronics to control and compensate distribution networks due to the occurrence of bi-directional power flows. This motivates the need for reduced order models of medium voltage distribution circuits for use in designing control systems and compensators. This work presents the use of shifted interpolation points as an option to further improve the accuracy of reduced order models. In this research, the IEEE 123 Node Test Feeder is reduced to 72- and 42-order. It is shown that the accuracy is not considerably improved between the 72-order and 42-order reduced systems. The accuracy of the reduced system was improved after performing the reduction by shifting the interpolation point from 0 to 5. Results are validated by evaluating the time domain and frequency domain responses. An application of the model is given by simulating the inclusion of a static synchronous series compensator.
