International standardizations related to energy management and its influences to industrial automation

JEITA has contributed to activities of developments of ISO 50001 (EnMS) and related standards, and is suggesting energy management methods adapted to the current Japanese situation through participations in discussion of proposed standard drafts and in international meetings. According to backgrounds of the skyrocketing of energy price and global environment issues, EnMS was standardized internationally and governments have introduced EnMS to their policy. To accelerate this trend more, countries hold targets of energy efficiency improvements according to the agreement of COP21. Therefore, the number of ISO 50001 certified sites is increasing in the world. Although Japan holds energy saving targets in which 50.3 million kilo-liters of primary energy are reduced by 2030, the number of ISO 50001 certified sites in Japan is increasing slowly, since the Energy Saving Act has been already taken effect. But it is reported that measures by only conventional retrofitting equipment are not enough to achieve the targets. In this paper, it is described that a method of energy saving activities required to Japanese companies is the energy management from viewpoint of whole optimization, and ISO 50001 and related standards are effective for the method. Furthermore, it is reported that JEITA has started to discuss about energy management level as a new proposal international standard.
