Technology-enhanced learning through Sakai (Thuto) at the National University of Lesotho

Technology-enhanced learning through the use of learning management systems (LMSs) has proven to be central for teaching and learning in this digital age. It also aids in distance learning at reduced costs. It is due to these reasons and many others that the National University of Lesotho (NUL) decided to explore this use of technology. Sakai, an open source LMS was chosen for this task. Like other higher education institutes, NUL used re-use based software development methodology to implement Thuto. The use Thuto to ease teaching and learning at NUL has been a tremendous success. This paper presents the implementation, usage and user acceptance test results of Thuto LMS that provides platforms for e-learning and m-learning. The results obtained indicate that the use of Thuto is steadily increasing albeit the lack of highly subsidized Internet rates, free Wi-Fi access and few NUL lab computers that negatively affect the use of Thuto to its full potential.
