Development of a simulation tool for optimal design of a mobile photoplethysmography sensor

A simulation tool for optimizing a mobile photoplethysmography (PPG) sensor is developed and introduced. At its core there is the Monte Carlo technique simulating photons propagation through turbid tissues. In the simulation workbench various simulation procedures that include different boundary conditions, wavelengths, incident angles, power and type of the sources as well as its optical beam characteristics (collimated Gaussian beam, focused Gaussian beam and collimated launch) are realized. We expect that employment of the simulated layout of the PPG sensor and it's optical structure may help increase number of detected photons that convey tissue optical properties.
