Network strengthening using storage support: A case for increasing remote generation

Weak network characteristics make it difficult to maintain grid compliance which, in its turn, restricts photovoltaic (PV) installation capacity. An energy storage system (ESS) combined with an on-load tap changing (OLTC) transformer is proposed as a solution. PV power plants are often located at remote locations where the electric network is weak. A weak network model is defined and simulated, showing that installation capacity is limited. A control system is developed to allow the ESS and the OLTC transformer to work in conjunction with each other to maintain grid code compliance. The proposed solutions is simulated to show plausibility.
