A miniaturized self-actuated bandpass protection structure based on energy low-pass mechanism

In this paper, a miniaturized self-actuated bandpass protection structure with filtering and limiting functions is presented. Based on energy low-pass mechanism, this protection structure is sensitive to the power density or field intensity of incident wave. The unit cell dimensions and periodicities are sub-wavelength which is in the order of λ/15. Mechanism of operation, structural design, and full-wave simulation results of two prototypes are presented and discussed. Simulation results show that insertion loss for normal signals is less than 0.1 dB, and the shielding efficiency in 1 dB bandwidth in 1dB bandwidth is over 20.0 dB when high intensity wave incident. The structure can be deployed as an energy low-pass bandpass radome to protect the sensitive devices such as microwave receivers against high-power microwave/electromagnetic pulse (HPM/EMP) interference effectively.
