On the more rationale approach of HERO testing of the instrumented ordnances

An experimental study on the electromagnetic field (EMF) coupling to the inert instrumented bridge wires is reported in this work. The experimental studies are conducted on the S and X bands, as the hazards of electromagnetic radiation to ordnance (HERO) environment is maximum in these two frequency bands. The study was carried out with a metallic cylindrical body to study the resulting effects. In this paper the HERO certification is proposed with subjecting the ordnance circuit by the scaled field by measuring the shielding transfer of the shell. This approach eliminates the need of high intensity field generation as specified in the MIL-STD-464A, for full scale testing. Under the effect of the scaled field the induced current on the bridge wires are measured with Fabry Perot Interferometery method and compared with the safety margins [1] for assessing, whether the ordnance is safe or unsafe.
