Characterization of solar energetic H and He spectra measured by the energetic particle telescope (EPT) on-board PROBA-V during the January 2014 SEP event

Based on data acquired by the Energetic Particle Telescope (EPT), a Solar Energetic Particle (SEP) event study is performed where He flux peculiarities as compared to H are identified, so as to infer to conditions under which both ions have to be accounted for in radiation effect analysis. For this, the shape of solar H and He energy spectra as well as the H/He fluence ratio are characterized and three parameters relevant in radiation effects assessment are evaluated for the selected January 2014 SEP event: Total Ionizing Dose (TID), Total Non-Ionizing Dose (TNID), Linear Energy Transfer (LET) spectra. The contribution of He compared to H for Total Ionizing Dose (TID) and TNID effects is below 5% for devices shielded by > 2mm Al; whereas SEE by direct ionizations would be dominated by He for devices having a 0.6 MeV/(mg/cm
²
) threshold LET.
