Looking back: some radar recollections

The author reviews the history of military radar and the contributions of pioneers such as Watson Watt and his assistant Arnold Wilkins. By 1938, the design of the first early warning radar, called Chain Home or CH, had been completed. A chain of stations were constructed at intervals along the coast, from Aberdeen southward and around to Dorset. The CH stations remained in use until the end of the war, eventually with a power of over 1 MW. They proved useful in detecting the launching of V2 rockets, because range cuts from two or three stations could fairly accurately pinpoint their source. Radar developments in Germany and the USA are also covered.
