Review of network technologies in intelligent power system

Communication infrastructure plays a crucial role in operation and construction of a smart grid (SG). The growing issue of power grid congestion and the increase in power disturbances have emphasized the need to enhance electrical power networks using Wide Area Monitoring, Protection and Control (WAMPAC). Operation and control of the power grid need efficient and robust communication network architecture. To upgrade the existing power grid with present technologies used, new wired and wireless technologies, which are emerging out need to be addressed. In this paper, an overview of smart grid communication architecture and a comparative survey of the available communication technologies for the smart grid are given. The paper provides the necessary input to researchers and engineers about the communication technologies available for the SG. It deals with various ways to enhance the potential of traditional transmission and distribution system within the smart grid.
