Survey of current vehicle mass estimators in the context of future mobility

In the last years, the worldwide sales volume of electric vehicles increased and almost all well-known automobile manufacturers now have special departments for developing autonomous vehicles. This development leads to new challenges in the automobile sector. Besides the development of necessary components, one big challenge is the compliance with safety requirements. Autonomous vehicles need a large number of information for the calculation of the required brake force, to avoid crashes, or for the automatic lane change. One important information is the vehicle mass. Furthermore, this parameter is essential for a precise range prediction of electric vehicles, for the monitoring of the maximum loaded vehicle weight or some further advanced driver assistance systems. Therefore, this paper presents a survey of current vehicle mass estimators to meet the requirements of new mobility concepts and to increase the safety and the comfort of the individual road users (e.g. driver, pedestrian).
