Concept of a dielectric waveguide-based chip-to-chip multicast interconnect

An inter-chip communication network based on rectangular dielectric waveguide is proposed. Innovative chip-to-dielectric waveguide transition and dielectric waveguide Y-junction are proposed to connect multiple chips on a planar board. The chip-to-waveguide transition features low loss, small chip area consumption and on-chip self-alignment property. The dielectric waveguide Y-junction shows small radiation leakage. Measurement results are presented for prototypes scaled in size and frequency to operate at 6 GHz. Simulations indicate that the concept presents much lower transmission loss than wireless chip-to-chip communication.
