Driving performance characteristics affected by road edge rate marking on bridge section

More than 90% information drivers obtained is from vision during driving. Drivers make judgments, decisions, and actions by perceiving speed and location of the vehicle. By improving the driver's visual perception information, reasonable visual induction can give drivers an illusion which overrates the vehicle speed and underrate the distance headway, and then guide the driver to decelerate. This study considers drivers' visual perception first, proves the effect of road marking edge rate on speed control on bridge section. Firstly, design the simulated driving scene with variable typical markings edge rate according to the actual bridge. Then, test the speed characteristics, the following distance and the lane-keeping characteristics on the sections with markings edge rate by recruited drivers. The result shows, typical edge rate project can intervene driving behaviors and improve driving performance characteristics. The road marking edge rate as a visually perceived speed reduction measures can induce drivers to decelerate initiative by increasing drivers' speed perception.
