Platoon-based signal control for single intersection under condition of Intelligent Vehicle Infrastructure Cooperation Systems(IVICS)

Nowadays, urban transport has become increasingly congested. Some studies show that a large majority of traffic delay at an intersection was usually caused by interrupting vehicle platoons[1]. In that case, this paper utilizes the characteristics of the platoons and designs a platoon-based traffic signal timing algorithm in order to improve the performance of single intersection. With the development of Intelligent Transportation Systems(ITS), it is possible to improve the traffic signal control through Intelligent Vehicle Infrastructure Cooperation Systems(IVICS). Specifically, it is more convenient and direct to detect platoons dynamically by using the real-time traffic data which reflects the condition of each car and the traffic demand. The main contribution of this paper is to propose a new signal timing algorithm which is based on the idea of reducing platoons' waiting time. Then, the innovative algorithm is simulated on VISSIM platform; it is verified that the proposed model can reduce the travel time of vehicles significantly and thus improve the efficiency of the transportation.
