Cognitive Radio Transceiver

This chapter covers the four basic building blocks of a cognitive radio transceiver: spectrum sensing, feedback channel, dynamic spectrum management, and transmit power control. The multitaper method (MTM) is proposed as the method of choice for spectrum sensing. For dynamic spectrum management, two methods are discussed and compared against each other: one is based on self‐organized maps (SOMs) and the other one is based on minority games. The transmit power controller is designed based on a robust version of the iterative waterfilling algorithm (IWFA). A cognitive radio transceiver takes the form of a closed‐loop control system, where the feedback channel is used for two purposes: first, establishing a communication channel between transmitter and receiver, and then channel adaptive signaling. Information theory provides a quantitative measure of the amount of information, which depends only on the probabilistic structure of the communication channel.
