Biosynthesis of intervertebral disc matrix in vitro

Cells of the intervertebral disc are shown to express genes for aggrecan and collagen in an in vitro alginate culture system. Despite evidence for significant biosynthesis, the cells appear unable to assemble a mechanically functional matrix in this in vitro system.
