MPEG‐2 System Applications

A standard for coding video/audio is typically defined so that it can be used in any conceivable application; there is no reason to limit usage of the standard to mainstream applications. However, sometimes niche markets have requirements that are not shared with the mainstream applications, in which case the mainstream applications may apply a subset of the generic standard. Hence, in many applications a need was identified to define additional constraints. To ensure interoperability within an application domain, such constraints are usually specified by application standardization bodies. In addition the application standardization bodies often specify complementary technology, such as the use of application specific program specific information (PSI), carriage of teletext or closed caption type of data, channel coding technology, and the use of scrambling and tools to support interactive applications. This chapter provides some Motion Picture Experts Group‐2 (MPEG‐2) system related standards defined by digital video broadcasting (DVB).
