PHASE SHIFT KEYING (PSK) MODULATION, DEMODULATION, AND PERFORMANCE

This chapter discusses the various forms of phase shift keying (PSK) waveform modulations with an emphasis on binary PSK (BPSK) and quadrature PSK (QPSK) corresponding to M = 2 and 4 respectively. It focuses on PSK‐modulated waveforms and the description of constant amplitude modulations that involving continues‐phase frequency modulation (CPFM) and frequency shift keying (FSK). Specific examples, examined in the chapter are: sinusoidal FSK (SFSK), alternately referred to as sinusoidal MSK (SMSK), Gaussian MSK (GMSK), and phase‐shaped multiphase PSK (S‐MPSK) with linear and raised‐cosine phase shaping. The chapter examines the spectral characteristics and bit‐error performance of the various forms of PSK modulation. It identifies various definitions of signal bandwidth and discusses spectral mask specifications that must be met to conform to national and international regulations. The chapter also examines the spectrum and bit‐error performance of the spectral root‐raised‐cosine (SRRC) waveforms and presents simulated performance results for SRRC BPSK and SRRC QPSK as a case study.
