NGN Standards and Architectures

This chapter covers main drivers to NGN which include fixed and mobile broadband access to Internet, convergence towards IP‐based networks and services. Further it provides view into the main ITU‐T NGN standards, as well as synergy among ITU, IETF, 3GPP and IEEE in such standardization process. Chapter 3 explains the all‐IP network concept for NGN by definition of NGN architecture and its horizontal separation on transport stratum and service stratum. Also, it covers different functions in each of the stratums as well as management functions, including the identity management, and end‐user functions. The chapter describes NGN control architectures and protocols from the functional point of view, and discusses numbering, naming and addressing in NGN.
