Chipless RFID Sensor for Noninvasive PD Detection and Localization

This chapter proposes chipless radio‐frequency identification (RFID)‐based passive sensor for partial discharge (PD) detection and faulty source identification. It first discusses the limitations of current technology for PD detection and localization. For the prototype of our PD sensor, a cascaded multiresonator‐based chipless RFID sensor is used. The chapter then summarizes the main features of frequency modulation‐based PD sensors and the suitability of the proposed sensor for HV condition monitoring. Next, it details the operating principle of the proposed RF sensor and illustrates the configuration of the sensor system. In addition, the theory regarding simultaneous PD detection for multiple faulty HV equipment using time‐frequency analysis is presented. Then, a frequency modulation‐based chipless RFID PD sensor system is developed and experimentation is performed to validate data encoding with ultra‐wide band (UWB) PD signals. Finally, time‐frequency analysis of captured PD signals is carried out to investigate simultaneous PD detection in 2‐D time‐frequency plots.
