EEG burst detection: performance evaluation

Prior research has shown that bursting in early recovery, is an indicator of neurological outcome following a hypoxic-ischemic injury. This paper compares three burst-counting procedures, the "gold standard" clinician, the Teager Energy Operator (TEO) and the Square Law Detector (SLD). Analysis of detection performance showed that the TEO easily detects more accurate bursts than the traditional SLD. During periods of high EEG background activity, the TEO maintains a high burst detection rate coupled with a low false alarm rate.
