Optical microresonators for biomedicine applications

The paper, after a brief review on optical microresonators for biomedicine, illustrates a set-up based on a praseodymium doped microdisk. It is more deeply described and a few design details are reported. This compact amplifier is based on chalcogenide Pr

-doped microdisk coupled to two ridge waveguides. The gain close to G = 7.9 dB is simulated for an input signal power of -30 dBm at the wavelength of 4.7 μm and an input pump power of 50 mW at the wavelength of 1.55 μm. This kind of optical cavity could find application in biomedicine when active sensing is required.
