A miniaturized wearable button antenna for WiGig applications

Wireless Gigabit Alliance (WiGig Alliance), a microwave WiFi is becoming a popular trend in today's communication for its multi gigabit data transmission rates at a short range. As it provides faster communication at unlicensed 60 GHz spectrum, it is widely used for transmission of audio/video from computing device to other processing/large display devices. Designing a 60 GHz millimeter wave antenna is a main challenge as it provides radiation losses due to its minimal wavelength. Variety of on-chip or in-package antennas, antenna arrays by combating radiation losses are proposed for this unlicensed 60 GHz WiGig spectrum using complicated micro-fabrication and interconnect technology. In this paper, a compact miniaturized planar antenna in the form of shirt button is proposed for WiGig applications. The proposed wearable antenna is simulated in ANSOFT HFSS and simulation results show its favorable performance in WiGig spectrum.
