Impact of adding new generators in a loop network with optimally placed SFCL

Resistive Superconducting Fault Current Limiters are rapidly growing in popularity as a reliable and fast acting device to mitigate excessive short circuit currents resulting from adding new generators in an existing system or interconnection of networks. Short-circuit current is strongly related to the cost of apparatus and the efficient use of power transmissions. Therefore the introduction of SFCL provide an effective way of suppressing high fault currents in large interconnected networks. However the determination of optimal location of SFCL in a large network and most importantly the effectiveness of this determined optimal location with new added generations is utmost important. This paper depicts the effect on fault current when new generators are added with SFCL placed optimally in a loop network. The model used is the resistive model of SFCL modelled in the Simulink environment of MATLAB. The Simulation results thus obtained were used to study the influence of optimally placed SFCL in a loop network when new generators are added in the existing system.
