OHLM — Integrated solution for real-time monitoring of overhead transmission lines

In 2009 the Transport System Operator of the Power Grid in Romania (CNTEE Transelectrica SA) has initiated several SMART GRID pilot projects to monitor and diagnose online the power stations and high voltage lines, as support for accurate decisions on operation and maintenance activities, respectively for intelligent asset management. In Romania, the technical conditions for the on-line OHL monitoring systems are mentioned in the internal technical norm “Technical specification for complex system for online monitoring of overhead power lines of CNTEE Transelectrica 5A”. The monitoring system is appropriate to be used for 110 kV, 220 kV and 400 kV overhead lines. The paper presents the OHLM system for online monitoring of the operational parameters of the OHL's, of the weather, respectively of the vandalism actions on the metal tower and its anchors (if the tower has anchors). The OHLM system includes also an intelligent electronic devices for acquisition/processing/storage and remote data transmission (to the power system operation dispatcher/the power system diagnosis and condition monitoring center/the data management center, etc.) and an independent power supply source. The paper also presents the results of a comparative analysis of the operation and condition parameters that are monitored on-line.
