Influence of algae growth on the electrical performance of RTV coating

Algae contamination was widely observed on the surface of RTV (Room Temperature Vulcanized Silicone Rubber) surface, which was a threat to the external insulation performance of composite insulating materials. Algae growth on RTV coating was simulated under artificial laboratory conditions in this paper. The electrical performance of algae coated RTV materials was measured by flashover tests and leakage current. Results showed that algae changed the microstructure of the material surface and algal cells reduced the flashover voltage and increased the risk of flashover of silicone rubber material. The research on the influence of the external insulation performance was important for the operation and maintenance of composite insulators.
