Medical system based on wireleless sensors for real time remote monitoring of people with disabilities

This paper describes the research for the design and implementation of a flexible, scalable and cost-effective medical system based on wireless sensors for remote monitoring of some vital physiological parameters. The proposed medical system has been designed to be integrated into a complex electronic system, based on assistive technologies, for assisting in the communication between the patients suffering from neuromotor disabilities and the caretakers. In the same time the described system is able to acquire, store and process few physiological parameters (vital) of the patients. Therefore, it can be also used for continuous remote monitoring, in real time and for a long period, at their homes or at the specialized institutions, of neuromotor disabled patients with chronic illness or having high medical risk. The monitored parameters include heart rate, arterial saturation of oxygen, respiratory rate, or body temperature, and are continuously acquired by using custom developed hardware, connected to commercially available modules, are processed and transmitted to a remote computer. A user-friendly graphic user interface running on monitoring computer has been developed, to display the measured parameters for selected patient and information related to status of the wireless sensor.
