Complex rotating vector method for smooth torque control of a saturated switched reluctance motor

This paper describes novel complex rotating vector methods for calculating the air gap torque of a switched reluctance motor (SRM). These vector methods are used to derive a number of insightful methods for improving the smoothness of the SRM's air gap torque. The development covers both unsaturated as well as saturated SRMs. Theoretical methods are developed, alternative implementations of such rotating vector methods are described and experimental results are included on a commercial, unsaturated SRM and on a commercial, saturated SRM with asymmetry. The results verify the capability of the proposed vector methods.
