Effects of Influencing the Individual Leg Inductance in Case of Paralleling Modules on Basis of XHP 3 and EconoDUAL

Paralleling, not just of IGBT modules, is of special interest for customers as they can easily adapt the individual systems current rating, just by choosing the amount of devices. This trend is supported by semiconductor manufacturers through, e.g. modular IGBT module concepts, such as XHPTM 3 or EconoDUAL(exp TM). But utilization of such a system to its full extent requires not only an appropriate module design, but in addition a well-defined environment, especially an inductively uniform designed DC busbar and PCB layout, respectively. In this paper the effectiveness of an inductively non-uniform DC busbar is discussed on device level on basis of experiments as well as by means of simulations. Moreover, the impact of a demonstrative containment action has been examined by experiments.
