A compact and wideband slotted dual-polarized antenna with high-isolation and low cross-polarization

A design for a wideband dual-polarized antenna with high isolation and low cross polarization is presented. The proposed antenna itself consists of four smaller square elements. The novelty of design simply resides in manipulating the pattern of arc-shaped slots on each square. Tackling the need for extra via to the ground, the arc-shaped slots change the path of the surface currents and suppress not only the cross polarization but also enhance port to port isolation and compactness of structure. By further taking advantage of slots, a wider bandwidth is achieved. It is also shown that the antenna has a bandwidth of 65% (1.45-2.75 GHz) for return loss less than -10 dB with an isolation as high as -40 dB between two ports. The proposed antenna has a half-power beam width (HPBW) of around 65° and an average gain of 8.1 dB for 45° slant polarizations. The proposed antenna can be used as a base station antenna for wireless applications.
