Removable EBG Common Mode Filters

Subsequent to the introduction of the onboard electromagnetic bandgap (EGB)‐based common mode filters, this chapter describes their evolution to removable EBG‐based common mode (R‐EBG CM) filters. This chapter describes the different topologies available for the removable EBG filters, ranging from the configuration with the traces kept on the main printed circuit board (PCB) to the one with the differential pair transitioning into the removable EBG. The removable EBG concept is powerful and can help many potential electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) issues. Among the various possible parameters, the impact of the number of patches forming the removable EBG geometry plays a significant role and is presented in this chapter. The chapter discusses the design of more elaborate removable EBG CM filters with two specific design examples. The first consideration addresses the reduction of the filter dimensions and therefore the space required on the main board. The second consideration concerns the trade‐off between notch depth and notch bandwidth.
