The search for South African airways flight 295

Steadfast Oceaneering, Inc. recently performed a successful search operati on for a South African Airways 747 aircraft that had crashed in the Indian Ocean. Using a special deep ocean sonar system, the Steadfast search team located the aircraft in less than 14 hours of sonar search in water depths of over 4400 meters. Steadfast is the prime contractor for search operations for the U.S. Navy's Supervisor of Salvage office. The tiny island of Mauritius served as the base of operations for mobilization and deployment of all search assets. This is believed to be the deepest success­ ful search operation on record-deeper even than the TITANIC operation of 1986.
