BESS connection impact assessment

This paper presents the considerations required to study and assess the connection impact of Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) onto utility grids. The EMTP-RV model of the system and a case study of one of the most recent BESS connection impact studies, done for Kitchener Wilmot Hydro, will be presented. It will be shown that in addition to the conventional steady state studies, transient modeling and analysis are also required for the successful connection impact assessment of a battery energy storage system.
