It is noted that when one previews pictures on a screen before printing them, what is seen usually bears only a vague resemblance to what is produced. In this context, four output devices which are often called in at successive stages of refinement of an image are discussed: (1) cathode-ray tube; (2) laser printer; (3) Linotronic typesetter output on special high-contrast slick paper, (sometimes this is the final stage; it is then pasted up and photographed to make printing plates); and (4) Linotronic directly on photographic negative (for really high-tech output) to make plates. The use of these devices to produce three kinds of images-line drawings, graphic images, and shaded images-is described.<
