In the previous chapter, looking at virtuality and emulation provided us with an opportunity to find the material within the virtual. By looking at how virtuality is produced and enacted—what Mackenzie calls “practical virtuality” (Mackenzie 2006b) in the encounter with code—we saw that a strong conceptual distinction between the virtual and the material cannot be supported. The virtual is also material.
