Spatially separated single-polarized vs. collocated dual-polarized MIMO measurements

This paper presents the results of multiple-input-multiple-output (MIMO) channel measurements, comparing a collocated dual-polarized reception system and a classic MIMO system, having spatially separated single-polarized antennas on both terminals. The measurement campaign takes into account a land mobile satellite (LMS) pedestrian scenario in an urban environment. The ergodic channel capacity is found between 4.1 and 5.3 b/s/Hz and varies significantly with the elevation angle. The dual-polarized configuration presents better capacity results especially in line-of-sight (LOS) propagation conditions. Finally, the increased correlation levels in both scenarios indicate that the channel favors diversity or beamforming as opposed to multiplexing.
