Initialization of Full Electromagnetic Transient Simulation via a Novel Transition State Calculation

With the integration of more and more nonlinear components such as the power electronic devices in modern Energy Internet systems, traditional electromechanical transient simulation would not be able to accurately reflect the dynamic response of modern power systems. System level full electromagnetic transient (EMT) simulation could be a possible supplement to the power system simulation. However, very few researches have touched the area of system level EMT simulation. One of the main obstacles for full EMT simulation might be the initialization issue. Therefore, a novel transition state calculation (TSC) approach for the initialization of full EMT simulation is proposed. The TSC approach is aiming at obtaining the steady-state initial values for the detailed electromagnetic transient simulation, based on the single-phase power flow results. The transition state is able to combine the features of power flow steady-state models and the dynamic models of the electromagnetic transient network. Case studies on IEEE-9 test system are performed to evaluate the correctness and effectiveness of the proposed approach. Comparing with the traditional power flow initialization method, the proposed TSC approach is irrelevant to fault types, and has faster response and smoother transient waveform during the full EMT simulation.
