Location prediction for solid waste management — A Genetic algorithmic approach

Solid Waste Management [SWM] has evolved as critical issue in emerging countries due to the increase of solid waste deposits. Identifying locations to dump and process solid waste is important, as it is linked with issues to environment, health and ecosystem. This paper address the issue of identifying location for waste dump yard using a Genetic Algorithm approach. Genetic Algorithm [GA] is generally applied to identify optimal solutions in many applications. A Methodology is proposed to model Genetic Algorithm parameters to predict locations based on Geo points. The data for the study is collected from Coimbatore district of Tamilnadu a state of India. The data attributes constitutes geo points for locations of schools, buildings, water bodies and transportation paths. The selection of attributes for fitness evaluation are based on the selection criteria of Ministry of Urban Development, Government of India. The experimental result of the algorithm for various generations identified optimal locations for solid waste dumps in four zones of Coimbatore. The results are verified and validated based on google maps to ensure the correctness of the prediction.
