In numbers: Opportunity rover

PLANNED TO LAST for a century, and equipped to withstand a natural disaster of unprecedented scale, the New Safe Confinement (NSC) has been designed not only to contain the destroyed Chernobyl reactor, but to dispose of it. The concrete and steel structure, which is large enough to enclose the Statue of Liberty, has been built to replace the original confinement structure that was hastily constructed to keep waste from escaping into the atmosphere. The enormous metal arch was assembled in an area to the west of the damaged reactor before being slid into place above the existing sarcophagus in November 2016. Later this year, two overhead bridge cranes contained within the structure will begin dismantling that original confinement building and reactor unit.
