Thermoelastic Damping in Functionally Graded Microbeam Resonators

Recently, the functionally graded materials (FGMs) have gained considerable attention. The thermoelastic damping (TED) plays an important role in the inherent energy dissipation of the microbeam resonators. In this paper, TED in the FGMs microbeam and composite beam resonator are derived and investigated. The results show that: The TED in composite beam is always larger than the value of monolithic material beam. However, for some values of the exponent parameter n , one can obtain a kind of specific FGMs beam (e.g., n=1 or 2) whose TED can be smaller than the values of both the original constituent materials. Moreover, as a function of the geometry, mechanical, and thermodynamic properties of the beam constituent material, it finds that a secondary peak appears in the FGMs beam resonator.
