Indoor Navigation Using Visible Light Communication

A system for indoor navigation using Visible Light Communication (VLC) is devised. It involves transmitting data by intensity modulating optical sources, such as light emitting diodes (LEDs), faster than the persistence of vision of the human eye. This method not only overcomes the drawbacks of Global Positioning System (GPS) based conventional indoor navigation but also provides a more energy efficient solution. The paper highlights the analog and digital hardware and software design of a transmitter and a hand-held receiver to realize VLC based indoor navigation. The results of the trials and the performance analysis of the implemented hardware, based on the proposed design, are presented in this paper.
