Replacing RF with VLC in hand held mobile networks — Using solar powered light communication with network planning

In the current scenario, there is so much of an increased usage of radio frequency (RF) for mobile communications that there is a major problem of bandwidth allocation. In this paper, we are replacing RF with optical wireless communication (OWC) links for voice communication in mobile networks, so that the huge bandwidth of optical signals can be exploited. The nodes in the network are light transceivers with a solar panel as a receiver, and light source (light emitting diode LED) as a transmitter. These nodes are oriented on the top of every building. The communication between hand held mobile stations (MS) and nodes happen through RF and node to node hops happen via light. In the proof of concept a network of three nodes has been built. Audio transmission between the nodes via light has been achieved. This experimental model demonstrates the above concepts, its feasibility, and a detailed procedure on the implementation.
