Comparative analysis of short circuit calculation accuracy of conventional classic analytical and numerical software methods

This paper deals with the comparative analysis of short circuit calculation methods (SCC) and the establishment of their comparative accuracy. The analysis is carried out by simulating the full range of SCC with a particular comparative emphasis on the three-phase and singleline-to-ground faults. Three most frequently applied SCC methods for power systems have been applied in this comparative SCC accuracy analysis. Two of the methods ie software packages applied which are used for large scale industrial power systems analysis were the PSS/E and the MATLAB/SIMULINK. The third method applied was the conventional analytical Thevenin-based method of symmetrical components. The results obtained are compared with respect to methodologically affected accuracy and their practical applicability for SCC for required calculation purpose. The case study has been applied for the Podujevo Substation (PS) busbar of the Kosovo Power System (KPS). A long series of all four SC fault types were applied and the obtained results were analysed in order to establish comparatively their respective levels of calculation accuracy and practicability of application. for the purpose required. Needless to say, the application of PSS/E provided the exact results which were used as the etalon base value for comparing the results obtained by the two other applied methods.
