Bidirectional DC-DC converter using four-state switching cell

This work presents a static bidirectional step-down or step-up converter using the four-state switching cell. This four-state switching cell is composed by six controlled switches, six diodes and a coupled inductor. The converter using this cell works in three distinct regions as changing the duty cycle. The converter is analyzed in continuous conduction mode in the three regions of operation, operating as step-down (Buck) or step-up (Boost). The analysis shows the main waveforms, the static gain, the operating steps, the design of output filters, sample project and experimental results. One of the main structure characteristics is the reduction of current efforts in the switches and the multiplication of the frequency in the reactive elements of the converter. So, with these characteristics, it is possible to improve the dynamic response of the converters, employ semiconductor with lower current capacity and increase the power density processed by converter.
