Trends, system architecture, and networking issues in advanced multimedia satellite systems

This paper provides a high level discussion of the trends, system architecture, and networking issues in advanced multimedia satellite systems utilizing multi-beams, Ka-band, onboard processing, and ATM-based packet switching technologies. The issues that are discussed here are based on the Advanced Satcom system which is a wideband wireless platform to complement broadband wireline technologies for delivery of interactive multimedia services to consumers and businesses across North America. The Advanced Satcom program is a government R&D initiative with participation of the Canadian space industry. The program is now being considered for implementation by Telesat as a potential owner, operator, and wholesale service provider. Launch of this system is planned for 1999 with in-service date in the year 2000.
