Universal R-dump converter for switched reluctance motor-realisation using bidirectional switches

This paper presents a new converter topology for switched reluctance motor drives. A novel converter configuration that can excite the motor with direct grid supply i.e., alternating current supply is proposed and realized using bidirectional switches. The prototype considered is four coil five terminal machine of which the fifth end is formed by connecting one terminal of all the four coils. Out of the many converter topologies available, this structure can only make use of a dump type. The proposed converter topology can draw power directly from an AC grid. The elimination of the rectifier and DC link capacitor has reduced the size of converter. A closed loop speed control is also implemented and performance for various loads is analyzed.
