Analysis of spectrum handoff under secondary user mobility in cognitive radio networks

Cognitive radio offers a foreseeable solution to the spectrum underutilization problem through opportunistic use of licensed spectrum by co-existing secondary network. It also promises to implement dynamic spectrum assignment to increase spectrum efficiency for future wireless communication. The implementation of cognitive radio network demands proper analysis of spectrum handoff for successful completion of secondary user's ongoing communication satisfying Quality of Service requirement for both the networks. This paper presents a theoretical analysis of spectrum handoff for non-stationary secondary user considering departure rate of both spectrum holes and secondary user as parameters in a dynamic environment. A generalized analytical model of probability of spectrum handoff in home cell and neighbor cell of an ongoing inter cellular SU communication is presented.
