Propagation effects on Satellite Communications and navigation systems

The paper discusses the key propagation effects for satcom and satnav systems, the models used to predict them and some of the impairment mitigation techniques. For satellite navigation the ionosphere is posing challenges whereas for fixed satellite services the troposphere is the main concern. Mobile satcom services are affected by shadowing, blockage and multipath.
