Comparative evaluation on converters of SRM drive under various loading conditions

Switched Reluctance Motor (SRM) drive can be operated with many types of converter configurations. Asymmetric converter which uses two switches and two freewheeling diodes per phase winding is used in all the applications. However some applications use different converter configurations. In this paper, two different converters used for energizing SRM machine are analyzed and their performances are compared with the conventional asymmetric converter. The current, speed and torque outputs of a SRM machine when operated by these converters are analyzed using MATLAB Simulink under no load and loaded conditions. The current overshoot, mean value of current, mean value of torque and steady state speed error have been analyzed for no load and loaded conditions. From the results obtained, it is possible to select the right converter topology to enhance the performance of SRM machine from the three converters analyzed under different operating conditions.
